A national project aimed at enhancing the country’s electoral justice system was launched in Accra on Friday.
The project which is being funded by Star-Ghana would be implemented by the Legal Resources Center (LRC), a non-governmental organisation and LADA Institute.
It aims to ensure the legality of the electoral process, safeguard the political rights of the public as well as educate the public on their electoral rights.
It would make electoral rules and regulations easier for the public to understand and also ensure public inputs into on-going electoral reforms.
Madam Daphne Lariba Nabila, Executive Director of LRC noted that the overall objective of the project is to reduce the risks of violence that emanate from electoral proceedings and processes.
She said the project would make the principals of electoral rights, reform documents, laws and rules much more user friendly and easily comprehensible for the average Ghanaian at the grassroots level.
Madam Nabila said they would galvanise adequate information from the laws to train, educate and build the capacity of the electoral station officers in relation to rules, conducts and processes of elections.
She added that they would engage the Chief Justice, the Judicial Training Institute and the Judicial Service to ensure the adjudication of electoral disputes are fast tracked.
According to her, a Steering Committee chaired by Justice Dennis Adjei, a Court of Appeal Judge had been instituted to implement the project with the aim of increasing the public’s confidence in the electoral justice system.
Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah, Acting Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), urged Ghanaians not to resort to violence but always use the law to settle electoral disputes in the upcoming elections.
He noted that Ghana was a model of democracy in the West African sub-region and Ghanaians must protect the current peace.
Mr. Akuamoah urged the judiciary to begin to engage and educate the country’s politicians on electoral laws so that the elections would be peaceful.
