The Legal Resources Centre recently launched its “Consolidating the Electoral Justice System in Ghana” project—and, on June 23, 2016, hosted the first meeting of the Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee is comprised of people from different sectors of society such as the Honourable Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei as the Chairperson of the committee who represents the Judiciary, Ms. Matilda Tettey, who works with the Ministry of Education, Mr. Francis Ameyibor, who works with the Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Magdalene Kannae, who works with the Local Government Service and Mamaga Amega Kofi Bra I, a queen mother who represents the traditional authorities. Under this Project, the 5 members shall meet once quarterly to review activities and to advise on project implementation.

During the first meeting, Ms. Daphne Lariba Nabila presented the objectives and the project rationale to the Committee. After the presentation, the Steering Committee reviewed the schedule for the 2016 General Election released by the Electoral Commission and discussed the ways in which it might impact the project. Members stressed the need to translate simplified versions of the laws into local languages; and they decided it was necessary not only to promote these local languages in printed materials, but that electoral laws should be explained to the public in the simplified terms of local languages for television and radio broadcasts.

Activities of the “Consolidating the Electoral Justice System in Ghana” project are designed to have an impact in all ten of Ghana’s regions. Thus LRC together with the steering committee members will determine which constituencies will be incorporated into the project
