The Legal Resources Centre (LRC), in partnership with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), has stepped up public education on the use of motorcycle helmets in the Northern Region.
As part of the initiative, the two institutions organised a one-day training workshop for selected journalists in the Northern region to equip them with the knowledge needed to raise public awareness on road safety.
Motorcycles remain a major means of transport in the northern part of the country, yet many riders still ignore the use of crash helmets, leading to avoidable deaths and injuries in case there is a crash on the road.
The programme officer of the LRC, Enock Jengre, expressed concern over the influx of various types of helmets into the country, many of which do not meet safety standards. He called for the enforcement of uniform standards for motorcycle helmets to help reduce fatalities and head injuries.
“The Legal Resources Centre is therefore partnering with institutions in the road safety chain to set standards for motorcycle riders in Ghana. “This will help save lives,” he said. He also advocated for attitudinal change on the part of the riders to prevent road crashes.
Northern Regional Director of the NRSA, Abdulai Bawa Ghamsah, stated that several sensitisation campaigns have already been carried out in the region but added that efforts are being intensified to reduce the carnage on the road. He also stressed the need to curb the importation of substandard helmets into the country.
