ONE DAY POLICY DIALOGUE:THE IMPACT OF OFFSHORE OIL EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION ON GHANA’S FISHERIES SECTOR

The Legal Resources Centre took part in organising a day’s workshop on dialogue on oil impact on fisheries organised by Oil Watch Ghana and Corporate Social Responsibility Movement (CSRM). Ghana joined the league of nations of oil producers and has since been making frantic efforts at ensuring that the necessary structures are in place to maximise benefits from the hydrocarbon production, since commercial oil was found in 2007.
The objectives of the workshop were to:
1. To initiate processes at identifying policy challenges militating against the implementation of the provisions in the Fisheries Act 625.
2. To identify key institution for collaboration in order to address the policy gaps
3. Develop a road-map for advocacy and engagement
4. Produce a comprehensive policy report for inter sectoral engagement.
5. Ultimately to enhance policy/legislative coherence in the development of Ghana’s oil sector by properly defining the role of the Fisheries Commission in the Oil Production to safeguard the Fisheries sector.
