The membership of the National Technical Committee (NTC) on Automobile tasked with the mandate to develop standards for motorcycle crash helmets and child restraints system has held its first meeting to develop standards for motorcycle helmets and child restraint system.

The meeting which commenced on Monday, 23rd June 2025 and ends today, Friday, 27th June, 2025, was represented by Enock Jengre, Programme Officer, of the LRC.

The meeting reviewed the draft motorcycle helmet standards being developed. The NTC, which is led by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), is composed of members drawn from the GSA, Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority, Ministry of Transport, and the National Road Safety Authority. The rest are representatives from Automobile industry players  in the private sector, academia, the LRC and the Law and Development Associates representing civil society organizations.

The review exercise aims at making input into the draft document which was developed by the working group being led by the GSA.

So far, the membership of the NTC has made various inputs into the draft standards document which would be submitted for public review.

At present, Ghana does not have standards on motorcycle crash helmets. Hence, all manner of helmets are being imported into the country. This exercise, therefore, aims to draft mandatory standards for motorcycle crash helmets fit for Ghana’s weather condition and road network.

This exercise, when completed, and with the eventual enforcement of a helmet programme, would be made compulsory for all motorcycle riders to use the prescribed standards approved by the Ghana Standards Authority.
