To commemorate its 2016 Citizenship Week Celebration, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) embarked on a mission to educate the children of Ghana onthe qualities of a good citizenry by organizing teaching seminars at basic schools for Pupils. During the weeklong celebration, NCCE collaborated with several civil society leaders in order to distill the virtues of patriotism and the qualities of a good citizen on the students,so as to mold them into role models and mentors in their community.
As part of their collaboration with civil society leaders, the NCCE invited LRC’s Executive Director Ms. Daphne Lariba Nabilato speak at the St. Andrew Junior High School to grade 4, 5, 6, and 8 pupilsas part of the NCCE Citizenship week activities. The event took place on Monday, May 30th 2016, in Madina, Accra.
The theme for the event was ‘A Disciplined Ghana’. In essence, Ms. Nabila spoke on the critical need for discipline in the society as a key factor fornation building; shethen educated the pupils on their civic rights andtheir responsibilities as Ghanaian citizens.
She went further to emphasize the need for the pupils to abstain from wrongful actions such as underage voting, snatching of ballot boxes, rioting and other illegal acts as the country goes to the polls thisNovember 2016. Thestudents were taughtto be proud of their nation,to be patriotic citizens and to promote the good name of Ghana.They were also taught the need to berespectful ofnational symbols like the Ghanaianflag and the National anthem, and they pledgedto fulfilltheir duties as Ghanaian citizens.
The headmistress of St. Andrews’s JHS, Mrs. Grace Riche later thanked Ms. Nabila for taking the time to talk tothepupils on their civic rights and responsibilities as Ghanaian citizens. She stated that the seminar was very timely as it is an election year, and the education of students is vital to ensuring the continuation of peace, prosperity and stability in Ghana.
