The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) with funding support from the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) has undertaken a 4 day training session captioned “Training on Legal Aid and Human Rights” held from 24th to 27th October 2022 at Ange Hill Hotel, East legon-Accra.

This initiative is to train paralegals on legal aid and human rights by providing them with essential legal knowledge and skills that they require to support people who need legal services.

Participants comprised personnel of the LRC and Legal Aid Commission specifically administrative staff and volunteers totaling 25 participants. Participants were taken through the following modules: Module 1-Paralegals, Module 2-Ghanaian Legal System, Module 3-Human Rights, Module 4-Legal Aid, Module 5-Contract Law, Module 6-Labour Law, Module 7-Criminal Law and Module 8-Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Participants were provided with a manual encapsulating the aforementioned modules tailored towards building their capacity towards providing legal aid as well as protecting and promoting Human Rights. Copies of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana were also provided to all participants.

Facilitators for the training were Ms. Daphne Lariba Nabila, Clarke Noyoru, Robert Tettey Nomo Jnr and Rita Nupe Demuyakor who took participants through the 8 modules which had been developed into a manual tailored to the needs of participants.

Facilitators took participants through role plays and group sessions in order for participants to practicalize the knowledge acquired during the session.

Speaking to participants, the Executive Director of LRC, Ms. Nabila, stated that the LRC is committed to training individuals as Paralegals with the hope to bridge the gap between legal services and communities around Ghana. She added that the LRC’s focus is to help train and assist community-based paralegals to promote human rights and democratic values in communities thereby contributing in building a resilient Ghanaian society poised for development.

Also present at the training were personnel of GIZ, Mr. Gregory Maraite, Project Manager, Lydia Yamoah Hagan, Technical Advisor and Doreen Delali Anyormitse, Administrator.

Participants were charged to apply the knowledge acquired in their line of duty and report after the training on how the knowledge acquired had been useful to them in dealing with matters that they had to resolve or handle.
