As part of efforts to influence national institutions to be more transparent, accountable, human rights-oriented and consistent with the brand outlook of Ghana’s Justice for Children Policy, Legal Resources Centre a non-government organization has organized a stakeholders Consultation on Legal and Policy gaps on Justice for Children at Takoradi in the Western Region.
The programme was aimed at engaging with stakeholders to get input on policy, legislative and institutional gaps on issues affecting children in contact and in conflict with the law in Ghana.
The nationwide consultation programme is supported by European Union. It was on the theme “Justice for Children: Bridging the Gap between Legislation and Practice”.
The project within the broad outlook of Ghana’s justice for children system will ensure that children in conflict and in contact with the law are adequately protected and their rights promoted through targeted interventions including policy and legislation reforms as well as enhanced service delivery.
It will also seek to review existing child justice legislative, policy and institutional frameworks, identify gaps in the frameworks and propose amendments to legislation or policy reforms for the promotion and protection of children who are in conflict and contact with the law.
And offer a platform to the relevant stakeholders in the Child Justice Sector to build synergies and ensure massive discourse on strategies that would promote an enhanced children policy and relevant legislation.
The Project Coordinator for Legal Resources Centre, Lawyer Clarke Noyoru in an interview called for the licensing of social welfare officers to practice as social workers so that they will offer professional services such as probation, writing of social enquiry reports and others that are necessary in the justice for children spheres.
Mr. Noyoru also advocated that the capacity of Queenmothers and other stakeholders should be built through capacity building programmes to improve their ability to handle children’s cases efficiently.
The stakeholders’ consultation programme was attended by Traditional Rulers, Assembly Members, Legal Practitioners, Media Practitioners, Religious Bodies, Security Agencies, Government Institutions, NGOs among others.
