Mr. Ghamsah emphasised that motorcycles remain the most common means of transportation in the Northern Region, yet many riders do not use helmets, putting their lives at risk.

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has called on journalists to step up efforts in sensitising the public on the use of helmets in the Northern Region as part of measures to curb road traffic fatalities.

Mr. Abdulai Bawa Ghamsah, Northern Regional Director of the NRSA, noted that although a number of sensitisation programmes on helmet use have been rolled out, stronger media partnership is needed to help address the rising road safety challenges.

He made this appeal during a one-day training workshop for journalists in Tamale, organised by the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) in collaboration with the NRSA. The training aimed at equipping media practitioners with knowledge to educate the public on the importance of wearing motorcycle helmets.

Mr. Ghamsah emphasised that motorcycles remain the most common means of transportation in the Northern Region, yet many riders do not use helmets, putting their lives at risk.

Mr. Enock Jengre, Programme Officer at the LRC, explained that the Centre has intensified campaigns to reduce avoidable deaths and injuries resulting from motorcycle crashes. He underscored the need for a standardised approach to helmet use to minimise head injuries and fatalities in road accidents.

“The Legal Resources Centre is therefore partnering with key stakeholders in the road safety chain to create standards for motorcycle riders in Ghana in order to reduce fatalities,” he stated.
