The government has been urged to take drastic action on children engaged in begging on the streets.
Mr Enock Jengre, Project Officer for Legal Resources Centre (LRC) a child rights advocate, who made the call, wants those children to be moved from the streets.
He said this in a sideline interview with Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah at a training workshop organised by LRC for paralegals drawn from some four districts in the Ashanti region including Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Asante Mampong Municipal, Sekyere East and Kwabre East.
The participants were trained on family welfare and juvenile justice to enable them to effectively prevent and protect children from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Mr Jengre said the phenomenon of children begging on the streets is worrying and called on the government to put measures in place to deal with the canker.
He noted that the nation has a law that prohibits children from engaging in begging and, therefore, want the law to be enforced.
He said the centre conducted a study on child beggars in the Ashanti region and discovered that there were some adult behind the act. He noted that those profiteers, according to the study, coached the children on how to beg and later collect the monies they get from begging from them.
Mr Jengre wants those profiteers to be arrested to deter others from engaging in such acts.
