LRC participated  in the just ended 2017 Annual Meeting of the Public Interest Lawyering Initiative for West Africa(PILIWA) held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire from September 21st to 24th 2017.

The conference organized by the Public Interest Lawyering Initiative for West Africa (a collaboration between Advocates for Community Alternatives, Green Advocates International, and the Center for Public Interest Law) was dedicated to ensuring that communities in West Africa have the support they need to resist the destructive impacts of an externally imposed development model that privileges extraction of natural resources over sustainable and community-driven livelihoods.

As one of the resource persons for the event, the Executive Director of the LRC, Ms. Daphne Lariba Nabila, gave a presentation on “How to grow a national public interest network”. She shared LRC’s experience in growing a public interest network in Ghana: how to engage members and have lawyers work on public interest cases in Ghana.

The PILIWA network since its inception provides a forum for the professional community to meet yearly. LRC together with other participants find support, solidarity, and advise during these meeting which helps to maintain public interest practice in the respective West African Countries.
